Whilst doing this I have edited a photo in darktable and am happy with the results and then exporting it to a file gimp can open. I have to apologize for the mistake I made on the title of my question: the actual problem should be that DT was somehow stuck with this exporting operation it just shows 'exporting 1/1 to file on disk' (at bottom of left panel), but never finish the task. If you import your images and then rename them, Darktable will not recognize the new name. There is no need to change export directory and no conflict with file name.
